[Photo/Xinhua] A major country should honor its commitments and cannot eat its words, said Wang Guoqing, spokesman for the first session of the 13th National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference. Wang made the remarks at a news conference Friday in Beijing when asked about recent comments made by US officials about Washington's regret in allowing China's entry into the World Trade Organization in 2001. The spokesman noted that after entering the WTO, China has been seriously fulfilling its commitments regarding tariffs and opening markets, opposition to protectionism and the promotion of fair competition. Facts have shown that China has stayed true to the path of reform and opening-up, and the country has resolutely supported building an open world economy, Wang said. China is a supporter, builder and contributor working for the multilateral trade mechanisms, Wang added. Also, the spokesman noted that many members of the WTO have been worried by the unilateral words and actions made by the US. Both China and the US are important members of the WTO, so they both should defend the authority of the WTO rules and jointly perfect the multilateral trade mechanisms with the WTO at its core, Wang said.
